SCHOOL, FOR THE MOST PART, had been mundane, certainly nothing to write home about. We had been assigned classes and individual desks. No surprise, Mika had found a way to be my desk mate, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having to sit down close to any one of those children would drive me crazy.

News Lord Marley had withdrawn his son—who I found out was called Brooke Marley—from this school made rounds all around campus, and it didn’t take anyone long for them to connect the dots back to me, so naturally everyone avoided me. I wouldn’t want to sit with someone scared of me either, so it was a win-win situation.

Of course the news had reached Grandall and Petra, and they were not amused. For the first time in my life, I was punished. My book rights had been revoked—and all my books seized—and I wasn’t allowed to leave my room for another week. And Mika, being as intuitive as he is, tried to deescalate my punishment and wrote to them apologizing for letting me stand up for him in a fight, but all it did was earn me a ‘You did a good thing, but you’re still in trouble’ speech. A for effort, I guess.

A lot of what they were teaching was what I’d already learned from Petra a long time ago, so all I could do was idle away. Mika, on the other hand, took it far more seriously than the rest of us. He took notes, asked questions, and wasn’t scared to voice his opinions and theories. A real bookworm.

“That’ll be all for today,” Mrs. Arby said, concluding a lecture on how to cast spells effectively. She was a good teacher, I’d give get that, but I’d had Petra teach me, so I easily spotted the places she lacked and could do better. “Oh, I should add, you’ll be having a special lecture at the end of the day. An introduction to elemental reactions and how dangerous they can be. It’ll be taught by the intelligent Dame Mixxy.”

That’s right… I’d forgot Mixxy had said she teaches classes here.

Mika slammed his hands on his desk, and everyone turned to look at him. He had stars in his eyes. I’d also almost forgot about his obsession with collecting knight coins for—

“THE Mixxy?”

“Y-yes, Mika. She will be personally conducting this lecture, but it’s completely optional.” Everyone in the room let out a sigh of relief. “So those of you attending please come sign up here.” Mrs. Arby dropped a notepad on the desk.

Mika turned to me and tugged my shirt by the sleeve.

“What are you doing?” I said, pulling my sleeves away from his clippy fingers.

“Don’t you want to be part of the lecture?”

“Did I say I wanted to?”

“Oh, come on, it’ll be fun! It’s the brilliant Dame Mixxy. I thought you knew her?”

It was because of that brief interaction I’d had with her that made me hesitant to sign up for the class. There was a
